Benedict X Anti-pope or pope from April, 1058-June, 1059, Benedict X was born John Minicus and was cardinal bishop of Velletri when the Count of Tusculum bought the papacy for him. Peter Damiani, then cardinal bishop of Ostia, refused to crown Benedict. When Pope Nicholas II's council at Sutri excommunicated Benedict, he fled to the castle of Gerard of Galeria. Captured, Benedict renounced the papacy and retired to a family estate until Hildebrand imprisoned him in the hospice of Sant' Agnese in 1060. Benedict died a prisoner c. 1073 or 1080.
