Carmelite prior of Mount Carmel. He was French by birth, but went to Mount Carmel. Elected prior, Brocard asked St. Albert, the patriarch of Jerusalem, to draw up a rule for the monks. This rule, established in 1195, became the foundation for the Carmelite Order. Pope Honorius III, who had been displeased because the rule was not formally approved by the Holy See before being established, received a vision from the Blessed Virgin Mary. He confirmed the rule as a result of that vision. Brocard, also called Burchard, ruled for thirty-five years and was greatly respected by the Muslims of the region.
