LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "It's tough. It's a rough feeling," said Yankee captain Derek Jeter.

Jeter went 0 for 4 as the team's designated hitter, ending a seven-game hitting streak and dropping his average to .253.

The 81-77 Yankees missed the playoffs for the second year in a row, the first time they've done that since the '92-'93 season.

"It's disappointing. It's frustrating," said manager Joe Girardi. "This is not where you want to be at this time of year."

Jeter, who is retiring at the end of this season, received a standing ovation by Yankees fans on the September 24 game, especially in the eight inning, when the lead over the Orioles was slipping.

"The game wasn't over. We were trying to come back," Jeter said of the eighth. "You can't help but notice. I catch myself looking around sometimes and I've always tried not to do that but I've caught myself a couple of times."

Bat-maker Louisville Slugger issued a pres release were it announced that it was retiring model number P72, the bat that Jeter used throughout his baseball career. It will be renamed DJ2 in his honor.
